The Empaths is a comic snapshot of our culture under the dark umbrella of the Trump presidency (the play was written in 2018). The 20-to-30 year olds of that time became increasingly self-aware and empathic, and worked to let go of the toxic assumptions and labels that defined their parents generation. They developed new, still-evolving language and behavior that represents a more accepting society. The play is an examination of the impact this new world has on dating and cross generational relationships.
the characters...
Celine Fineman
Lichen-Vargas-Koen-Spence-Anderson
Kate Margalite as Celine
Growing up in Chicago as the apple of her father’s eye, Celine wanted for nothing. She attacks life with an enthusiasm that nearly borders on the frantic. Although, lately, she’s suffered a string of fails both in business and love, and worries that being raised by Dad to feel so special may be her problem, especially with finding love. Early/mid 30s.
Sam Perwin as Lichen
Raised on a commune by evolved, conscientious parents, Lichen (named for the algae) was instilled with a profound sensitivity. He’s highly self-aware and others-aware. He works for a socially conscious mid-level hedge fund (SCHMLF), which invests in environmentally, ecologically and ethically correct ventures. For Lichen, carrying a heavy load of empathy into adult life comes at a price. Late 20's.
Dr. Fred Gerard
Charles Weinstein as Fred
A renowed, in-demand Chicago high-brow psychotherapist often published in academic journals. A lion approaching Winter, who's been therapized himself, Fred carries around a rich "internal" life, which can at times be competitive and petty.
Barry Fineman
Ron Komora as Barry
Founder of Fine Commodes, formerly the #1 Midwestern distributor of toilets. Barry's a born salesman, and it shows in his approach to life. He dreams of selling bidets of his own design to Americans. Widowed a while ago, his chapter two has finally begun in earnest with a new wife and their electric partnership.
Dianne Tibedeaux
Jackie Davis as Dianne
Recently married to Barry. Magnetic and hard-driving, she's a top Public Relations exec. In her previous life, Dianne was the care-taker, but now, in her second act with true love Barry, she's living large, going for it.
The Empaths premiered at the Wellfleet Harbor Actors Theater directed by Jeffry George.
The Cape Cod Chronicle described the play as
